Breast Augmentation vs. Breast Implants
A breast augmentation is the surgical procedure which increases the size of the breasts for a fuller and more symmetrical look. This procedure is completed using breast implants, which are medical devices placed inside the breasts to increase their size. When someone refers to “breast augmentation,” they are speaking about the surgery, while “breast implants” refer to the devices used to achieve the desired look.
What is a Breast Augmentation?
A breast augmentation is a common type of plastic surgery which can increase the size of the breasts using either implants or fat transfer. The goals of a breast augmentation is to create fuller breasts which are symmetrical, proportionate with the rest of the patient’s body, and meet the patient’s cosmetic goals. The procedure can be beneficial for patients who have naturally smaller breasts, asymmetrical breasts, or a “deflated” look after weight loss or pregnancy and breastfeeding.
What are Breast Implants?
Breast implants are medical devices used in a breast augmentation to increase the size of the breasts. There are many types of breast implants, with the three main categories being saline, silicone, and gummy bear. All three of these types include an outer silicone shell which is filled with a corresponding material.
Saline implants are filled with a saltwater solution. These implants are approved for patients who are 18 years old or older, and can be pre-filled or placed in the body before filling the implant with saline. In case of implant rupture, the saline is safely absorbed by the body, leaving the implant shell for removal and replacement. Saline implants tend to slightly less natural looking or feeling.
Silicone implants are made of a silicone gel which is typically more natural looking and feeling. These implants can be used for patients 21 years old or older, and are available in a variety of shapes and sizes. In case of an implant rupture, the silicone gel will remain in the breast pocket and must be removed surgically.
Gummy bear implants are a type of silicone implant that is generally firmer than traditional silicone implants. This allows them to better retain their shape while still feeling soft and natural.
