What is a Mommy Makeover?
A mommy makeover is a customized suite of surgical procedures designed to address the areas of the body that are commonly affected by pregnancy and childbirth. Many women find that childbearing changes their body in ways that don’t revert back naturally or with exercise regimens. These areas commonly include the stomach and breasts, although each woman can take a different approach to their mommy makeover procedure.
Mommy Makeover Candidates
There’s no cap on when it’s too late for a mommy makeover, but it can be too early. It’s important that you’re fully recovered from childbirth and that your hormones return to a stable state before you opt for invasive surgeries. It’s also important to consider whether you plan to become pregnant again, since this can affect your results. If you’re in between pregnancies or think you may change your mind in the future, you should consider non-surgical options or adjust your mommy makeover schedule accordingly.
It’s also important to consider that you’ll need to take time away from work and childcare, meaning the timing may not be right if you’re unable to make accommodations. Because the mommy makeover combines more than one surgical procedure, it comes with more downtime.
What Happens During a Mommy Makeover?
A mommy makeover will be unique to the areas you want to address and the appropriate procedures. In general, a mommy makeover includes procedures like a tummy tuck and breast lift, but some other common options include breast augmentation, breast reduction, a Brazilian butt lift, and liposuction. Together, these options can help restore your figure with a single procedure so that you only require one downtime period. A mommy makeover can be performed with general anesthesia at our certified, in-house facility, and Dr. Diktaban will ensure you understand the steps of your customized surgical plan before your surgery date.
Mommy Makeover Procedures
During your consultation with Dr. Diktaban, you’ll select the ideal procedures for your cosmetic goals. Some of the most commonly included procedures in a mommy makeover are:
Tummy Tuck
The tummy tuck is one of the most common procedures sought out by postpartum women. During pregnancy, it’s common for the stomach to be left with stretched skin, loose muscles, and stubborn fat. The tummy tuck can not only get rid of sagging skin, but it can also restore the separated abdominal muscles, reducing common symptoms like back pain or incontinence. The overall result of a tummy tuck is a trimmer, more contoured stomach.
Breast Lift
The breast lift is a common option for postpartum women because it can restore the breasts to a more upright position when they sag or stretch due to breastfeeding. During a breast lift, the breasts are brought to a higher position on the chest wall and the nipples are repositioned above the breast crease. It can easily be combined with implants if you lost breast volume during pregnancy or want to achieve better projection.
Breast Augmentation
Breast implants are one of the most effective ways to restore breast volume lost during pregnancy. For many postpartum women, breast implants can help them achieve the younger, higher-profile breasts they had before pregnancy. Some women even choose a more augmented look or larger size than what they had before in order to further boost their confidence.
Facelift
Pregnancy can cause stress on more than just the body. Some women find that they’ve visibly aged throughout childbearing and feel it doesn’t reflect their energy and youthfulness. The facelift can reverse signs of aging in the face and take as many as 10 years off the facial profile. There are even facelift alternatives like FaceTite or AccuTite for women who aren’t good candidates for the facelift.
Liposuction
Liposuction is a common addition to many mommy makeovers. Many women find that they can’t lose stubborn fat that accumulates during pregnancy (sometimes called “baby weight”) through traditional diet and exercise. Liposuction can remove fat permanently from common areas like the stomach, hips, or thighs. It can even be combined with a tummy tuck for more complete body contouring.
Breast Fat Grafting
Sometimes called natural breast augmentation, this procedure collects fat from one area of the body and uses it to enhance the breasts. The benefits of breast fat grafting are twofold – liposuction can be used to reduce fat and contour areas like the stomach or hips while also enhancing the breasts without the need for implants.
Mommy Makeover Recovery
A mommy makeover recovery can be more extensive based on which procedures you opt for. For a mommy makeover that addresses only the breasts and stomach, you can expect to undergo dedicated rest for a few weeks before returning to light activities. If you also opt for procedures like liposuction or a Brazilian butt lift, your recovery may be longer. Although the mommy makeover’s recovery is extensive, the benefit is that you don’t need to go through multiple recoveries from multiple procedures.
It’s extremely important to wear your compression garments as much as possible during this time. Compression garments can reduce swelling, prevent fluid buildup, and help your skin adhere to the new contours as you heal. If you opt for breast surgery, it’s extremely important to wear your surgical bra to support your breasts and relieve pressure from the incisions. Although Dr. Diktaban will provide detailed aftercare instructions, you can generally expect to wear your compression garments and surgical bra for at least six weeks.
Dr. Diktaban will prescribe medications to manage any discomfort as well. Most patients are able to go without medication within a week of surgery. You’ll need to avoid activities like bending or lifting, so you should enlist help with regular tasks around the house. You’ll check in with Dr. Diktaban to determine when it’s appropriate to resume your daily activities and exercise regimen based on your recovery process.
Mommy Makeover Results
Most patients begin to see their results at 6-12 weeks after surgery, although it can still take several months for all swelling to subside. As it subsides, you’ll see noticeable improvement in your figure and your confidence. It’s important to take steps to maintain your results by living an active lifestyle and preventing any future pregnancies. Although you can still get pregnant after a mommy makeover, another pregnancy can reverse your results. For this reason, it’s important to be finished having children before opting for a mommy makeover.
It’s also important to keep in mind that scarring is inevitable with any surgery, but Dr. Diktaban can help you explore ways to fade scars during your recovery. It can take up to a year for scars to fade, but by this point you’ll be able to enjoy your new figure and feel confident in every situation.
