What is the Facelift?
The facelift, sometimes called rhytidectomy, is a plastic surgery procedure designed to lift and rejuvenate the skin and underlying tissues of the face. Often, a natural result of aging is that the skin and tissues of the face become subject to gravity and a loss of elasticity, resulting in telltale folds and wrinkles. Even if you don’t feel like it, this can make you look older and more tired than you actually are. Using incisions and specialized sutures, a facelift can restore your facial profile to a younger look— by as much as one decade.
Facelift Candidates
The best candidates for a facelift are those who have significant signs of aging in the face that don’t respond to non-surgical treatments. Areas that a facelift can address include the nasolabial folds, sagging fat in the cheeks and jowls, and sagging skin in the chin and neck. It’s important that you’re in good overall health and able to undergo surgery, so Dr. Diktaban will go over your medical history during a consultation.
What Happens During a Facelift?
A facelift is performed under cocktail or general anesthesia at our certified, in-house facility. It begins with a predetermined incision, usually in front of or behind the ear, with extensions into the hair if needed. If you only require a little correction, the incision can be smaller than a full facelift. After an incision is made, Dr. Diktaban can use specialized techniques to lift and tighten the underlying muscles and tissues of the face, restoring them to a more upright position. Additionally, fat can be restored to a more youthful profile on the face. Once complete, any excess skin is trimmed away, and the incisions are closed and made ready for recovery.
Results and Recovery
You can expect about one to two weeks of downtime after your facelift procedure. During this time, you can expect some swelling and discomfort which can be managed with prescribed medications. You may not feel comfortable returning to public within the first few weeks, which is normal. It’s important to avoid strenuous activities and using your normal skincare products, and Dr. Diktaban will provide instructions on the right recovery timeframe for you. You should also sleep with your head elevated to avoid more swelling and pooling. You’ll begin to see your final results emerge within the first few months, and can enjoy a more rejuvenated and youthful version of yourself.
