Liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure that effectively removes stubborn fat with minimal downtime. Still, it’s important to know what to expect after your liposuction procedure so you can enjoy a smooth recovery and excellent results. If you’re considering liposuction, your plastic surgeon will discuss your best options during your consultation and make sure you know what to expect. Here are some things to keep in mind as you plan your liposuction recovery.
In the Recovery Room
A custom-fitted compression garment will be placed on your treatment area before you are transferred to the recovery room. While in the recovery room, you’ll be monitored and your vital signs will be checked. It’s a good idea to prepare some supplies ahead of time that you will need once you return home, including loose clothing, pillows, water, dark towels, pain medication, and meals.
The First 48 Hours
You can easily control any pain using oral medications. Any discomfort is usually at its worst for the first two days. During the first 24 hours, you will likely see a discharge of fluid from the incisions, and this is normal. You’ll also see some bruising which can last for a few weeks. If you develop a fever or notice a significant increase in pain, call your doctor immediately.
The First Two Weeks
Your compression garment will need to be worn 24 hours a day for the first five days. You should move around every couple of hours to prevent blood clots and reduce swelling. You’ll also need to rest and drink plenty of fluids. Dr. Diktaban will give instructions on how to bathe and care for your incisions so you should follow these as best as you can.
We’ll schedule a followup visit a few days after surgery. The compression garment will be removed to check your incisions. For the next week or so, you should still wear a compression garment most of the time. It can be removed when you shower. You can engage in light exercise, like walking, but should still avoid heavy activity until Dr. Diktaban otherwise indicates.
You’ll be able to get back to work about one week after your procedure. You’ll still need to wear a compression garment for about 12 hours each day. After about weeks, you can begin exercising like normal and performing other normal activities.
